newsmorphosis, 18 mar 10

I attended newsMorphosis by http://thinktechhawaii.com/ today. Lots of talk about news/media, where it is, where it's going and what's good/bad about all that. Here are some photos of the panelists. Probably the highlight for everybody was getting a bit more information about what Peer News (http://peernews.com) is planning. John Temple (http://twitter.com/johntemplepn) gave a short talk about what Peer News is going to do, and not going to do. Sarah Lacy (http://twitter.com/sarahcuda) posted a good summary of what he said on techcrunch (http://techcrunch.com/2010/03/18/more-news-about-omidyars-peer-news/) or you can read John's draft/notes (http://www.johntemple.net/2010/03/content-and-community-my-talk-on-peer.html) or watch the recording (http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/5544919).

Will provided a nice cultural counterpoint to the discussion by talking about what's going on in China with news media. (http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/5539926 at 0:45)

Mary Fastenau (Anthology Marketing Group), Sarah Lacy (TechCrunch).

Sarah livened up the crowd with her comments along the line of "Ten years ago we knew this was going to happen. Anyone who ten years ago did not see news papers going away was kidding themselves. We saw this happening.... It's newspapers fault that they did not adapt." She claims that a large part of the decline of old media can be chalked up to "[they're] doing a worse job."

You can watch her bit at http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/5539926 starting about 1:44.
